A useful fit for

A current-reference fit for a 49-note software-controller layout with NI browsing, parameter and transport controls, when semi-weighted keys are preferred and direct DIN or confirmed USB-C is not a hard requirement.

The main tradeoff

The official sources reviewed do not publish the A49's body width or identify the keyboard-side USB connector shape; a 49-key name cannot substitute for a measured fit. No 5-pin DIN output or drum pads are documented, key aftertouch is not established, and the keyboard depends on an external host or sound module for audio.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Does the A49 offer a 49-key range with hands-on NI software control?

NI identifies the A49 as the 49-key size of the semi-weighted A-Series and documents eight touch-sensitive knobs, a two-line OLED, a 4-D encoder, transport controls, pitch/modulation wheels and Scale/Chord/Arp Smart Play. The shared A-Series manual explains that browser and plug-in controls depend on KOMPLETE KONTROL and host integration. This is a software-led USB MIDI workflow, not an onboard sound source.

Can the A49 send five-pin MIDI to an external synthesizer without a computer?

The exact model sources point to the A-Series manual, whose rear-panel overview lists USB and the sustain-pedal socket but no 5-pin MIDI OUT. The supported direct plan is USB MIDI to a computer; external hardware needs another interface or routing device if it requires DIN. Verify an exact seller unit if a DIN jack is essential, and remember that MIDI control does not itself carry audio.

Is the A49 confirmed for a USB-C-only desk or a strict width cap?

The A-Series product page says USB 2.0 bus-powered and the manual says to connect the included cable to a USB 2.0-or-later host, but neither text identifies the keyboard-side connector shape. The reviewed sources do not state the A49's chassis width either. Do not infer USB-C from the USB standard or estimate a numerical desk fit from the render; check the exact unit's port and a measured dimension before purchase.

The Native Instruments KOMPLETE KONTROL A49 is a 49-key semi-weighted controller centered on NI's software browsing and parameter workflow. It offers more physical range than the A25 while retaining the A-Series display, eight knobs, encoder and pitch/modulation wheels; its documented host connection is USB MIDI, not a direct 5-pin MIDI output.

What the 49-key A-Series layout is for

NI lists the A49 as the middle capacity in the current A-Series, between a 25-key A25 and 61-key A61. The official page describes the A-series beds as custom and semi-weighted, and the shared manual says the three models keep the same feature set beyond their key counts. Forty-nine notes give more room than the A25 for chords and two-hand ideas before reaching for an octave button, but they still do not provide the full 88-key span. The A61 adds another octave while staying in the same general keybed family.

Above the keys, NI documents eight touch-sensitive knobs, a two-line OLED, a four-direction push encoder, preset navigation, transport buttons, pitch and modulation wheels and Smart Play controls for scales, chords and arpeggios. The A-Series manual describes the knobs adapting to the selected mode, so the surface is meant to control parameters rather than act as a bank of fixed hardware synth knobs. There are no drum pads shown in the product/manual layout, and the reviewed materials do not establish keyboard aftertouch. If your intended use relies on either capability, ask for explicit evidence on the exact unit.

The A49 is a controller for computer software, not a documented internal sound generator. NI describes using the keyboard to browse and play software instruments through KOMPLETE KONTROL and supported hosts. The audio comes from that host or an external instrument and must be sent to headphones, speakers or an interface separately.

How it compares with the other 49-key NI option

The Kontrol S49 MK3 also carries a 49-key label, but the shared capacity does not make it equivalent. NI documents the S49 MK3's Fatar TP/90 semi-weighted bed with polyphonic aftertouch, USB-C, rear 5-pin MIDI IN/OUT and four pedal inputs. The A49 instead has the A-Series custom semi-weighted bed, an OLED, USB 2.0 bus-power language and a rear layout with USB and one sustain pedal socket. The reviewed A49 sources do not verify the physical USB connector shape, a numerical body width, keyboard aftertouch or DIN ports. If the needs are just 49 notes plus NI browsing, the A49 may be sufficient; if DIN output or per-key aftertouch is essential, the S49's documentation is materially different.

Computer connection and the details it does not settle

NI states the A49 is USB 2.0 bus-powered and usable as a USB MIDI controller. Its manual explains connecting the supplied cable to the rear USB socket and to a USB 2.0-or-later computer, with direct host or powered hub recommended for reliable operation. Neither text names the device-side connector shape, so “USB 2.0” should not be read as “USB-C.” A USB-A or USB-C computer requirement is not enough by itself; check the keyboard's actual port and the cable a seller includes.

The manual's A-Series rear-panel view shows the USB connection and a foot-pedal socket for sustain, and does not show 5-pin DIN output. For an external synth that accepts only DIN, the A49 needs a separate interface/bridge and a compatible host route; the controller alone does not provide a direct cable path. That additional gear also does not make audio: the synthesizer itself still needs an audio path. The single TRS pedal input is assignable to sustain and can support half-damper pedals according to NI, but the exact pedal and cabling should be checked separately.

Physical fit, software and package checks

The official A49 page and A-Series manual reviewed here do not publish its body width, depth, height or weight. A 49-key count and a product rendering are not a numerical measurement. If a tray has a hard clearance limit, keep the A49 out of a width-filtered shortlist until you obtain a dimension for the exact edition, and add cable bends and hand space to that number.

NI lists KOMPLETE KONTROL, a KOMPLETE SELECT voucher/download and Ableton Live Lite after hardware registration. Those are software benefits, not sounds stored in the keyboard. Verify the account and license conditions with the current offer, particularly for used hardware, and confirm the supplied cable/documentation with the seller. A listing that says “includes software” may not tell you whether a license has already been claimed.

The product page names support for Logic Pro X, GarageBand, Ableton Live, Cubase, Nuendo and Studio One. Basic MIDI operation and deeper DAW transport or browsing control are separate. Read current NI host guidance if your workflow depends on particular track, browser or performance buttons.

Bottom line

The A49 is a logical fit for a middle-range, software-led keyboard setup when 49 semi-weighted keys and mapped NI controls matter more than direct hardware MIDI. Its limitations are not interchangeable with the S49: no direct DIN output is documented, USB-C connector form is not established, and numerical dimensions remain unknown in the reviewed sources. There is no confirmed drum-pad bank or sound engine. Check the exact A49 SKU, DAW setup, connector and physical measurement before treating it as a fit. This is a source-based evaluation rather than a report of hands-on use or testing.
