Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Does the 61-key MKV meet a 61-key floor if the desk allows 38.5 inches of body width?
The exact page lists 61 full-size, velocity-sensitive keys and a 38.5-inch width (977 mm), with a listed 7.5-pound weight. That meets the key floor and a 38.5-inch body cap exactly; cabling, hands, pedal reach and stand fit need room beyond the body measurement.
Explore this need in the finder →What if my width limit stops at 38.25 inches?
The MKV 61's published width is 38.5 inches, so it misses that strict body cap. The 49-key MKV is narrower but does not meet a 61-key minimum; the Oxygen Pro 61 is a separate 38-inch model with different controls and a documented DIN output.
Explore this need in the finder →Can the 61-key MKV drive a DIN-only synthesizer directly?
The model-specific rear-panel guide and M-Audio's rear image show USB and sustain connections but no five-pin MIDI socket. The documented route sends MIDI to a computer over USB; plan a suitable external host/interface if the receiver requires DIN.
Explore this need in the finder →Oxygen 61 (MKV) is the widest model in M-Audio’s Oxygen V trio. It provides 61 full-size, velocity-sensitive keys with eight physical pads in two banks, eight knobs and nine faders. The extra range over the 49-key sibling is real, but so is the 38.5-inch body; this USB-powered controller is designed around a computer-hosted instrument, not direct DIN hardware.
The case for 61 keys is simultaneous range
A 61-key bed gives more room to move across parts without the frequent octave changes that a shorter controller may require. That can matter when one hand holds lower notes and the other reaches higher material. It remains a controller, not an 88-key piano replacement, and the exact part—not a generic level or genre label—should decide whether this span is enough. M-Audio describes the keys as full-size and velocity-sensitive. The inspected MKV page and manuals do not specify weighted action, key travel, force, or aftertouch; they do not justify a personal statement about how the action feels.
The listed body measures 38.5 inches wide, 9.6 inches deep and 3.7 inches high, with a stated weight of 7.5 pounds. Its 49-key sibling is 32 inches wide and 6.4 pounds, so the additional 12 keys use another 6.5 inches of published width and add 1.1 pounds. The two larger models share the same documented eight knobs, nine faders and eight physical pads in two banks. If width is the constraint, the 49 has a real footprint advantage; if your fixed requirement is 61 keys, the 49 is not an equivalent substitute.
Nine faders, eight physical pads
The MKV 61's surface puts its nine assignable faders and eight knobs alongside transport buttons, a display, pitch and modulation wheels, an arpeggiator, Smart Chord/Scale functions and pad Note Repeat. Those tools can support a computer production workflow with fewer mouse trips. As with the 49, the pads are eight physical controls selected across two banks, not sixteen simultaneously playable pad squares. Their velocity response is documented; pressure sensitivity is not established by the page or manual. If drum expression depends on pad pressure, treat this as unconfirmed rather than using key velocity or aftertouch as a proxy.
Function names are not a substitute for setup. M-Audio's documentation describes DAW mode and automatic mappings, while its quickstart still instructs the user to select the DAW and configure its MIDI ports. M-Audio's support FAQ says the MKV family is class-compliant and uses core MIDI drivers, but a specific DAW version, mapping and host connection should be checked before relying on every control.
Computer MIDI is the documented route
The size-specific quickstart says the USB 2.0 port sends MIDI data to a computer and supplies power; M-Audio recommends an onboard powered port or a powered hub. The manufacturer rear image shows USB Type-B and a sustain-pedal connection. The manual's rear-panel list also names a power switch and Kensington lock, but no five-pin MIDI In or Out. A DIN-only hardware instrument therefore cannot be treated as a direct connection target based on this controller alone. Use a compatible computer/host and separate MIDI interface if that route is essential, and remember that the receiver needs its own power and audio path.
The MKV is not a self-contained sound source: the inspected product and setup materials describe MIDI control, not onboard synthesis or audio outputs. The host software instrument or an external receiver supplies sound. A 1/4-inch sustain input is present, but the maker’s listed package does not include a sustain pedal. The optional pedal, USB plug, cable bend and hand clearance are all outside the 38.5-inch body figure.
Choose the exact generation, not just the number
Oxygen 61 (MKV) is not Oxygen 61 MK IV or Oxygen Pro 61. The current Pro 61 is a separate reviewed model with its own direct DIN and control-surface documentation; it should not be confused with the MKV merely because both are 61-key controllers. Confirm the MKV suffix and exact rear-panel layout in any seller listing. M-Audio's listed box contents are the keyboard, USB cable, software download card, quickstart guide and safety/warranty manual. A used listing may not include every item or an unredeemed software entitlement, so ask about cable and card status rather than assuming registration transfers.
The Oxygen 61 MKV suits a buyer whose parts need its longer physical range and whose desk, stand and host can accommodate the wide USB-powered unit. It is a poor match if you need direct DIN output, built-in sound, confirmed pad pressure, a smaller body or an action description that the manufacturer does not supply. Check the exact suffix, computer/DAW setup, listing package, return terms and measured available space before choosing. This is a source-based assessment, not an ownership or playing test, and it does not imply current stock or price.
