A useful fit for

A four-octave earlier controller for a player who needs 49 full-size keys, keyboard channel pressure, pressure-sensitive pads, a nine-fader DAW surface and five-pin DIN control in a host-powered or separately adapted hardware setup.

The main tradeoff

It takes a 34.02-inch listed width, uses USB Type-B, and does not generate sound. The page's printed 33.3-inch equivalent conflicts with its 864 mm measurement, the computer-free power adapter is separate, and current unit availability is uncertain.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Does Impulse 49 meet a 49-key DIN/pad brief at a 34.25-inch body limit?

Yes on the manufacturer's metric width and feature fields: the exact model has 49 keys, eight pressure-sensitive pads, direct 5-pin MIDI Out and an 864 mm listed width (34.02 inches converted). The page also prints 33.3 inches, which conflicts; the matcher uses the metric conversion. At a 34.25-inch cap the nominal chassis fits, but there is little cable/hand margin.

What physical controls distinguish the 49-key Impulse from the 25?

The 49 keeps the family’s eight encoders, eight pads, LCD, wheels, pedals, DIN and transport controls, while adding the large model's nine 45 mm faders and nine per-fader buttons. It has 49 rather than 25 notes and is wider; those are documented layout changes, not a judgment that its key action suits every player.

Can I use it with a computer and an external MIDI synth at the same time?

The V5 manual describes a USB link to the computer and MIDI DIN to external hardware in one system. Computer USB normally powers the controller; a standalone arrangement instead needs an appropriate USB mains adapter. Confirm the exact MIDI channels, software templates, current operating-system support and included cable for any used unit.

The middle Impulse is a four-octave controller whose strong point is the combination of full-size keys, channel pressure, a nine-fader DAW surface and hardware MIDI.

A broader keybed with a familiar control layout

Impulse 49 has 49 velocity-sensitive, full-size piano-style keys with semi-weighted action and assignable keyboard channel aftertouch. Novation describes High Rate Scan technology for the keybed, but that is a manufacturer claim rather than a measured latency result. The range gives more room for two-handed parts and octave reach than the 25-key model while remaining shorter than the five-octave 61. It is still a controller: there is no published onboard sound engine or audio output, so a computer instrument or external sound module must provide the sound. The sources do not document a graded hammer mechanism, key-width measurement or a tested subjective feel.

The fader bank is the practical step up

The control surface includes eight endless encoders, nine 45 mm faders, nine per-fader buttons, eight pressure-sensitive backlit pads, a multifunction LCD, pitch and modulation wheels, six transport controls and an arpeggiator with Roll mode. In mixer mode, the fader and button rows are assigned to DAW tracks; in MIDI mode, they send general controller data. The guide also describes banks of eight channels and HUI-style transport/mixer control. That gives the 49 a more complete hands-on mixer surface than the Impulse 25, which has one assignable fader and no matching fader-button bank. It does not make the 49 universally plug-and-play: usable control depends on the DAW, template and software version. [US Impulse 49 page; model downloads; V5 manual]

DIN and USB-B, with a real power distinction

At the back, the listed connections are USB Type-B, five-pin MIDI In and Out, sustain and expression pedal jacks, and a Kensington slot. USB can connect the keyboard to a computer and supply its power while DIN sends performance data to a hardware synth; these are control routes, not audio. In a computer-free setup, the manual calls for a suitable USB mains adapter, not included. Novation recommends a direct host USB port rather than a hub and cautions that some laptop ports may be inadequate, particularly when the laptop is running on battery. This older USB-B product therefore does not satisfy a strict USB-C connector request even if a third-party adapter could bridge a particular computer. [V5 manual: connection and power plans]

Size and a manufacturer conversion conflict

The US specification lists a 864 mm body width and 332 × 100 mm depth and height. Converting the metric width gives about 34.02 inches, yet the same page prints 33.3 inches in parentheses; those figures do not agree. For the finder’s conservative width comparison, this assessment uses the conversion from the listed metric value and keeps the source conflict visible. A 34.25-inch body cap technically admits that figure but leaves only about a quarter inch of nominal slack; allow substantially more room for plugs, hands and neighboring controls. No exact product-page weight is published. The manual’s family diagram confirms that the 49 and 61 share the nine-fader surface, but their distinct key counts and widths still require separate decisions.

Earlier-model status, software and purchase checks

Novation’s US page displayed “Out of stock” on the 31 October 2026 check, but the embedded storefront fields included conflicting instock/purchasable markers alongside a zero US inventory value. I classify the Impulse 49 as an earlier comparison model, not as a guaranteed used or refurbished offer and not as permanently discontinued. The official downloads listing has current support material and Automap 4.12; its note says Automap is not supported on macOS Catalina. Verify the exact host OS, application, drivers and mapping you need. The product page lists Ableton Live Lite, but registration, activation and transfer rights for a particular earlier unit remain a seller/account check.

For a used example, inspect fader travel and button response, pad sensing, keyboard aftertouch, screen readability, wheels, pedals and DIN/USB sockets. Confirm that the Type-A-to-Type-B lead and any promised software are actually included; the manual’s original package list is not proof of the contents of a present listing. The 49 is a reasonable candidate when its four-octave range and fader bank matter more than a lighter travel footprint, but it is not a compromise digital piano. This review weighs the exact US specifications and V5 documentation; no hands-on testing or individual unit inspection took place.
