A useful fit for

A five-octave earlier controller for a player who needs 61 full-size keys, keyboard channel pressure, pressure-sensitive pads and a nine-fader DAW surface alongside direct 5-pin MIDI control.

The main tradeoff

The 61-key chassis is 40.24 inches wide by metric conversion, uses USB Type-B and has no sound engine. A separate USB mains adapter is needed away from a computer, host power through hubs is not guaranteed, and the product page's stock indicators conflict.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Does the Impulse 61 fit a 61-key DIN/pad setup within a 40.25-inch bare-body cap?

Yes on the documented feature set and metric dimension: the exact model has 61 keys, eight pressure-sensitive pads, direct 5-pin MIDI Out and a 1022 mm body. That metric value converts to 40.24 inches, so the 40.25-inch answer admits the bare chassis by only 0.01 inch; this is not practical cable, hand or stand clearance.

What does the 61-key body add over the Impulse 49?

Both have semi-weighted keys with channel aftertouch, eight pressure-sensitive pads, eight encoders, nine faders and nine buttons, USB-B, DIN In/Out and pedal sockets. The 61 adds twelve keys and a longer five-octave playing span; its listed width rises from 864 to 1022 mm. The 49 page's metric/imperial width conflict remains specific to that model.

Can the Impulse 61 make sound by itself, and what power does standalone use?

No sound engine or audio output is specified; MIDI Out sends control data to an external sound source. The V5 manual says computer-free use requires an appropriate USB AC-to-DC mains adapter, which is not included. With a computer, host USB normally powers it, but Novation recommends a direct native USB port and warns that some laptops may not supply enough current.

Impulse 61 retains the family’s DAW and hardware-control surface while adding a five-octave, 61-key playing span—and a much longer body.

Five octaves, not an instrument with its own sound

The Impulse 61 is a 61-note MIDI controller with velocity-sensitive, full-size semi-weighted keys and assignable channel aftertouch. Novation describes High Rate Scan technology on this family, but it is a manufacturer specification rather than an independent response-time measurement. Five octaves offer more reach for two-handed parts and broader performance splits than the 25-key version, with twelve more keys than the 49. The published material does not claim graded hammer action, and “semi-weighted” alone cannot tell a player whether the key feel will suit them.

It sends MIDI; it is not a self-contained keyboard instrument. The listed connections include USB Type-B, MIDI DIN In and Out, sustain and expression pedal sockets, but no audio output. A computer plug-in or a powered external MIDI sound source must make the sound and feed speakers or headphones. That distinction matters if you are replacing a home keyboard rather than adding a controller to an existing audio setup. [US product page; V5 English manual]

Controls for a DAW and a hardware destination

Across the upper panel are eight endless encoders, nine faders with nine buttons, eight pressure-sensitive backlit pads, a multifunction LCD, pitch and modulation wheels, transport controls and an arpeggiator with pad Roll and Clip Launch modes. The full-size variants use fader and button banks for mixer functions or assignable MIDI controls; the 25-key model instead has one fader. The 61’s controls are a meaningful part of the purchase, not just decoration around a long keyboard: mapping depends on a supported DAW/template and may require configuration. The pads’ pressure sensing is separate from channel aftertouch on the keys. [Impulse 61 downloads; V5 manual: hardware overview and DAW control]

USB power, DIN output and standalone limits

With a computer, the manual describes power over the USB cable and MIDI control through USB. It also shows MIDI hardware connected at the same time through the five-pin DIN output. A computer-free rig needs a suitable USB AC-to-DC mains adapter, which the manual says is not in the original box. Novation recommends a native USB port rather than a hub and notes that some laptop ports may not provide enough current, particularly on battery power. DIN carries MIDI data, not audio or power for the receiving synthesizer. If a strict USB-C host connection is essential, Impulse 61’s USB Type-B socket is the wrong connector, regardless of a potential adapter arrangement. Measure the full 40-inch span

The exact product page publishes a 1022 × 332 × 100 mm body and prints a rounded width of 40.2 inches. The metric value converts to 40.24 inches, the figure used in this assessment. A 40.25-inch cap nominally admits the body by only 0.01 inch; it does not account for the power/data lead, DIN plugs, hands, stand lips or space at either end. The 49-key Impulse is listed at 864 mm wide, so the 61 is 158 mm longer while retaining the same stated depth and height. Neither exact product page publishes weight, so the comparison should not substitute a sibling’s mass or an online seller’s unverified figure.

Older offer and compatibility checks

On 31 October 2026 the US page’s visible stock message said “Out of stock”; embedded inventory data carried contradictory purchase flags despite a zero US inventory field. The earlier label is useful for separating this platform from newer products, but it does not prove current availability, refurbished condition or permanent discontinuation. Novation’s downloads page lists the V5 manual, drivers and Automap 4.12; it explicitly says Automap is not supported on macOS Catalina. Confirm present operating-system and DAW support rather than assuming an older mapping utility remains suitable. Any bundled software depends on the exact unit, registration and seller terms.

Before choosing a used Impulse 61, check the full 61-key bed, channel pressure, all eight pads, nine faders and buttons, LCD, wheels, pedal inputs, both DIN sockets and Type-B USB port. Ask whether the original Type-A-to-B cable is included; for standalone use, plan the separate USB mains adapter and a sound-producing destination. This spec-led review uses Novation’s exact US product page and family manual. It does not claim ownership, hands-on testing or inspection of an individual unit.
